Today, the Victorian Parliament is considering new laws that would decriminalise abortion in Victoria. The pro-abortion and anti-abortion people are out marching in the street.
I’m all for it, decriminalise it. Make it illegal won’t actually stop abortions, any more than banning guns has stopped their use. However, you can offer some control for the woman concerned to make sure she is making a properly informed decision, has considered the ramifications by allowing abortion in a guilt, pressure free and safe way. What’s wrong with that?
My friends over at the SaltShakers, are understandably outraged and calling on all good christians to ring and visit their members of Parliament to express their opinion.
You know what? You bloody lot should stop trying to impose your religious morals on the rest of society. Its not your body, its not your life, it has nothing to do with you.
So, abortion will happen for convenience. Good. There’s too many of us in the world. I don’t care that its a ‘potential’ life. That life will never happen. There’s no regret on the part of the fetus, unborn baby, whatever term you would like to use. There is no god to get pissed off with you, and there is no ‘sanctity’ of life. Our life is not holy or sacred so get over it.
There is only one person who has a say. The pregnant woman (yes, you can say mother if you like, but until birth I don’t think so). There’s a role for the sperm donor, but that depends on the relationship, perhaps its irrelevant.
The woman can make up her own mind. She’s the one that not only has to carry the thing, but has to give birth and in all likelihood take the primary role in the child’s life for the next twenty years. That’s a big ask. Best done under the right circumstances.
Its interesting to follow the debate in US as the running mate for the Whitehouse has a 17 year old pregnant daughter. They’re (her parents) are delighted that she’s having the baby. I wonder if abortion was considered. I wonder if she’s aware of the awesome responsibility that is about to befall her. Is she mature enough. Will it lock her into a life of misery?
Life should be about options. You have the right to determine the direction of your life. You should have the right to determine reproducing and when, you should have the right to die when you want. Any challenge to these rights based on a religious point of view or moral should be discarded from the public debate. These decisions need to be made in the interest of the people, not to appeal to the outdated religious ideals that have fucked so many lives.
