Here’s a really good example of the insanity of belief.
My mate, Spinksy over at the suitably named Resistance to Thinking website is carrying on about Tim Tebow, some whacky christian footballer who’s good at scoring or some shit. Â He drops to one knee and prays at strange times, in public, while doing his footy thing. Â He also paints bible references on his face. Â He thinks that he loves jesus.
Tebow has become a bit of a laughing stock, with plenty of people mocking his dropping to the knee thing.
It seems that when Mrs. Tebow conceived her fourth child, young Timmy, she was advised to have an abortion, it’s not stated exactly why, and it doesn’t really matter.  The doctor apparently said the fetus was a tumor, and the good woman should abort it to save her life.
However, she trusts the lord her god and keeps it against the advice.  Of course, none of this can be independently verified, it all happened while the Mrs and the Mr and the three other kids were doing missionary work in the Philippines.
So, people like Spinksy think that this is clear proof that all abortion should be stopped. Â He also thinks that god has a plan and wanted Tebow to live.
If only we all were grateful for our existence. Tim Tebow continues to defy both critics and physicians. His story is a strong testament of God’s purposes coming to fruition.
What possible purpose or strong testament could there possibly be? Â That abortion is wrong? Â If Hitlers mother had of come out and said that she was offered an abortion, would that be a good thing or a bad thing?
This lamenting of things that may be is just wishful thinking. Â If Tebow wasn’t born, we wouldn’t have any fucking idea, nobody would be saying “if only Mrs Tebow hadn’t aborted that fetus”. Â It’s all about this crazy idea that their make believe deity has a plan. Â Look, shit just happens. Â If you want to think of nice things, then you should also think of bad things. Â How many times has the world be spared from dictators by abortion? Â (And the standard christian response is that at least the dictator would have a chance to accept jesus as their lord and saviour)
So while there are people starving, christians fundamentalist fuckwits like Spinksy actually think that their god is using a footballer to get the message out. Â That god needs to spend more time looking at the big issues not helping some half wit lob a ball or score a touchdown or kick a goal. whatever the fuck it is.
You do know, that there are more efficient uses of your time then dedicating what seems to be the majority of your recent blog posts to bagging out a single (admittedly conservative) Christian who at least has the guts to attach his real name to his posts.
If you can come up with reasoned arguments, or actual genuine discussion about something he says – its a legitimate use of a site and remains worthwhile reading. But simply aiming personal attacks with the intention of simply making fun of beliefs? Its a waste of your readers bandwidth, your readers time and has the sole effect of turning you from an educated opponent to a douchebag.
Thanks for you input Lachlan, feel free to make your own decision about whether to read my blog or not.
